Wayne County’s Quilting Heritage Exhibit
August 10th – November 2nd, 2008

Win This Quilt At The Raffle! Click here for details

In honor of Wooster’s Bicentennial and the American Quilt Study Group’s decision to hold their 2008 Seminar in Ohio, the Wayne County Historical Society’s Textile Committee is mounting a major exhibition of quilts related to Wayne County. The show, entitled “Wayne County’s Quilting Heritage,” will open on Sunday afternoon, August 10, and run until November 2, 2008. The featured quilts will tell the story of our county as reflected in fabric. The women who created these treasures helped to build this strong county as surely as the men who fill the pages of most history books. On display will be some rare early quilts brought to Ohio by settlers from their Pennsylvania homes, including the Paxson/Hart quilt made in the 1790s and donated by the daughter of historian Ben Douglas in 1921. Other early quilts include the Karr family quilt, ca. 1810s, and the Lorson family quilts, ca. 1820s. Wonderful pieced and appliquéd masterpiece quilts made in the mid-nineteenth century by Luci Armstrong, Eliza Baney, Ellen Boney, Mary Mobley Byall, and Lettice Hudders, among others, will be featured. Viewers can see the influence of Wayne County coverlet weaving on quilts made in the county, with a special focus on Peter Hartman. There will also be fabulous crazy quilts of both silk and wool, as well as twentieth century signature and fundraising quilts, showcasing women’s active participation in church and community activities. Plan to attend this exhibition, which promises to be an outstanding tribute to our textile heritage.

Archeology Day at the Wayne County Historical Society
October 18th, 2008

Exhibit Open
11:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Archeology and Preservation will work hand in hand on October 18 from 11 A.M. to 4 P.M. We will not only celebrate Archeology Month for Ohio but we will show how various Preservation organizations and their practices are put to use in celebrating the sealing of the City of Wooster Bicentennial Time Capsule. Linda Davis from the Wayne County Library and her committee will prepare the items that have been collected throughout the Bicentennial Celebration. They will be placed in a Time Capsule and the capsule will be sealed at 2 P.M. Why is the Time Capsule part of the Archeology Days? There have been times when Archeologist had been on a site to dig and have unearthed a Time Capsule that had been created many years earlier. Sometimes the Time Capsule was intentionally created and in some cases unintentionally created. But in either situation the story they reveal tells us of life in an earlier time. Archeology Day give young and old alike a chance for some hands on experiences when digging in an area where you may unearth artifacts from earlier eras. Greg Dush will be on hand to exhibit some Native American Artifacts from the area. Steve Kitchen will once again demonstrate the art of Flint Knapping. Jim Opatrny will present information about an archeological dig that took place in southeast Ohio. We will also bring out some of the artifacts that were found on the property of the Historical Society, as well as artifacts excavated by Roger Rowe from the privy behind the Beall House. We will also have representatives from the Wayne County Cemetery Preservation Society and the Wayne County Genealogical Society. These groups will show how the information that they are preserving assist with Archeological studies. With the interaction of these groups they will present the various ways to create history. Archeology Day is a family event and this will also give you chance to view the other buildings at the Historical Society free of charge. For additional information call (330)264-8856.
